Hungary Emerges as Top Rail Hub for Ukrainian Grain as Neighbors' Volumes Decline

Hungary Sees Surge in Ukrainian Grain Shipments

According to ХВИЛЯ: At the start of 2026, Hungary has become the primary railway hub for Ukrainian grain, even as overall export volumes across Ukraine's western borders have fallen. This shift in trade routes is significant for European food supply chains. According to data released during a meeting between Ukrzaliznytsia officials and agricultural market leaders, the average daily volume of grain railcars transiting Hungary has risen to 58.4, an increase of 6.8 units from the figures recorded in December of the previous year.

Slovakia, Poland, and Romania Report Significant Drops

Meanwhile, other Western partners of Ukraine have substantially reduced their intake of grain shipments. Slovakia's daily average has dropped to 22.9 railcars, down 8.1 units from December. Poland saw an even steeper decline, with transfer volumes shrinking by 4.1 railcars to just 7.8 units per day. Romania now has the lowest figures, at 5.1 railcars daily, a decrease of 2.8 units from the prior month.

Overall, Ukraine dispatches an average of 169 railcars carrying grain and meal daily across all its western border crossings. However, the total volume of rail exports has contracted by 16 railcars, or 8.6%, compared to December 2025. Consequently, despite logistical challenges, Hungary remains a critical route for Ukrainian grain.

The increase in Ukrainian grain exports via Hungary may be linked to improved logistical conditions and agreements between Ukrainian agricultural producers and Hungarian rail operators.

Given the reduced export volumes through other countries, Hungary is becoming an increasingly vital partner for ensuring regional food security. The declining export figures via Poland, Slovakia, and Romania point to potential issues in those nations that may require additional analysis and adjustments to trade policies. This realignment could have long-term implications for Ukraine's agricultural sector and its economic relations with neighboring states.
