Demographic Crisis in Ukraine: Why Mortality is Three Times Higher than Birth Rate
Ukraine has been facing a demographic crisis for more than 30 years. According to "Glavkom", the country has been experiencing a constant decline in population since the beginning of independence.
Experts note that in 2020-2021, the situation worsened due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Scholars anticipate an increase in mortality and a further decrease in the number of births.
"We have a serious problem, but it is not a catastrophe – there are certain opportunities to improve the situation", emphasizes the demographer.
Scientists point to the imbalance between mortality and birth rates in Ukraine, which hinders the demographic development of the country.
Highlighting the Future
Despite the war in the east of the country, it is expected that there will not be a massive exodus of citizens abroad. According to experts' forecasts, most women will remain in Ukraine, while part of the men may consider the possibility of going abroad.
The Director of the Institute of Demography and Social Research named after M.V. Ptukha of the NAS of Ukraine, Ella Libanova, notes that women who wanted to emigrate due to the war have already done so, so only those intending to stay in Ukraine have remained despite all the difficulties.
Ukraine is experiencing a serious demographic crisis, but experts believe there is a possibility to solve this problem. Mortality is increasing, while the number of births continues to decline, creating a population imbalance. It is also noted that the majority of Ukrainian women will remain in the country despite the war, while men may show greater speed in leaving for abroad. There is still hope for a positive review of the situation and for support in the country's development.
