Ukraine’s Entry in Junior Eurovision 2026

According to Главком: Ukraine has officially confirmed it will take part in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2026, making it the eleventh country to join the lineup. This marks the country’s twentieth appearance at the competition, which has been running since 2003. Svitlana Tarabarova has been appointed as the music producer for the national selection. She commented:

“The road to Malta begins with a simple application.”

National Selection and Final

Applications from performers aged 9 to 14 are expected to open shortly. The national final is slated for September. Oksana Skibinska, head of the Ukrainian delegation, stated that

“the national final should be expected in September.”

Junior Eurovision 2026 is scheduled for October 24 in Ta' Qali, Malta. Last year, France’s Lou Deloiz won the contest with the song Ce Monde, scoring 248 points, while Ukraine’s Sofia Nersesyan finished second with her entry Motanka.

This year, however, the field may be smaller, as France Télévisions opted out of hosting due to financial reasons. In May, the European Broadcasting Union announced that Malta’s national broadcaster PBS would take over as host.

Given these developments, Ukraine’s national selection timeline has shifted to accommodate the international final’s move to October. This could affect the total number of participants, raising the possibility of the smallest lineup in the contest’s history. Malta’s Festa culture, a UNESCO-recognized tradition, adds a unique layer of significance to this year’s event.

Ukraine’s involvement in Junior Eurovision 2026 underscores the contest’s importance to the country, which already boasts considerable experience in international music competitions. With the change in venue and financial challenges facing other participating nations, Ukraine must carefully prepare its selection process to maintain its standing on the global stage. The contest serves not only as an opportunity for young artists but also as a platform for cultural exchange between countries.

As Ukraine prepares for its participation in the upcoming Junior Eurovision, the selection process is closely linked to the recent announcement of Malta's hosting role. This change in venue not only affects the timeline but also highlights the significance of Malta's rich cultural heritage, which will undoubtedly enhance the event's atmosphere. Understanding the implications of Malta's responsibilities as host can provide deeper insight into what to expect from this year's competition.
