The main focus of discussion was progress on the National Strategy for Creating a Barrier-Free Space by 2030.
Accessibility Guide Released
During the meeting, a guide titled '10 Simple Steps to Ensure the Accessibility of Buildings and Structures' was introduced. Developed by the Ministry of Development in collaboration with experts, it offers practical advice for making infrastructure more accessible. To date, over 550 out of 1,265 planned measures for the 2025–2026 action plan have been completed.
Oleksii Kuleba: 'Barrier-free access is not a separate area of work. It is a principle that must be embedded in every state decision-from rebuilding communities and transport to digital services and access to basic services. The key is for people to feel these changes in their daily lives.'
The National Barrier-Free Week serves as a critical milestone in advancing the strategy, which aims to foster an inclusive environment for all citizens. The completion of 550 initiatives signals steady progress, though significant work remains. Emphasizing barrier-free access across all areas of governance also reflects a commitment to policy-level change and social responsibility.
As Ukraine advances its commitment to accessibility, it's essential to recognize the broader implications of these initiatives. Recently, the government announced plans to evaluate various public spaces, including homes, hotels, cafés, and gas stations for their accessibility. This comprehensive assessment will play a crucial role in ensuring that the principles of barrier-free access are applied consistently across the nation.
