Ukraine Calls UN Security Council Meeting After Major Russian Strike on Kyiv
Multilateral Forums Convened in Wake of Russian Attack
According to МЗС: Following a large-scale Russian assault on May 24, Ukraine has moved to convene several multilateral bodies. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha called for an emergency session of the UN Security Council, alongside a joint meeting of the OSCE Forum for Security Cooperation and the OSCE Permanent Council. These steps aim to secure a strong international response to Russia’s aggressive actions.
'I have instructed all our missions to international organizations to fully activate multilateral mechanisms in response to last night’s barbaric Russian missile strike on Kyiv.' Andrii Sybiha
Sybiha stressed that the UN, OSCE, Council of Europe, and UNESCO must deliver a decisive answer to the aggressor, which he said is trying to offset its lack of military success on the battlefield by terrorizing civilians.
Urgent Need for Global Action
The minister also highlighted the need for a strong, coordinated reaction from the international community regarding Russia’s use of intermediate-range ballistic missiles against peaceful cities. 'We call on our partners to take resolute multilateral steps aimed at deterring Russia and compelling it toward a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace,' Sybiha added.
This Ukrainian initiative could represent a pivotal moment in building an international front against ongoing Russian aggression. By activating multilateral formats within the UN and OSCE, Ukraine seeks to galvanize global support and underscore the gravity of the situation in the region. The response from international organizations may shape the conflict’s trajectory and help safeguard civilians in Ukraine.
In light of the escalating situation, the UK has expedited air defense supplies to Ukraine, underscoring the urgent need for enhanced military support amid ongoing Russian aggression. This swift action reflects a growing international commitment to bolster Ukraine's defenses in response to recent attacks.
