Svitlana’s Story: Financial Transaction Troubles

According to Radiotrek — Світ: A Ukrainian blogger living in Germany, Svitlana, received a €90 penalty after a €28 purchase at the Rossman store three months ago failed to go through. Although she had sufficient funds on her card and kept the receipt showing the payment, the money was never actually deducted. The fine includes late payment interest and fees charged by a debt collection agency.

Svitlana explained:

“Do you understand? The system didn’t take the money, I have no idea why it didn’t go through, there was money on the card. And I had a receipt that looked like I had paid.”

This is not an isolated incident; other Ukrainians have faced similar outstanding debts after shopping at various stores. Some have since switched to paying in cash, while others now keep all receipts for three years as a precaution.

Svitlana received a letter from the collection service confirming the debt. Her video detailing the experience is available on TikTok, where she shares her story and discusses challenges Ukrainians encounter while living in Germany.

Financial System Challenges for Foreigners

Svitlana’s case highlights the difficulties that foreigners-especially Ukrainians-can face with financial systems in Germany. Such situations can lead to serious problems, including fines and collection debts. It also underscores the importance of carefully monitoring financial transactions and retaining purchase records to prevent similar misunderstandings in the future.

As Svitlana's experience illustrates, navigating the financial landscape in Germany can be fraught with unexpected challenges for Ukrainians.
