Ukraine's First European Badminton Medal Won by Bugrova and Kantemir
Ukrainian Duo Makes History at 2026 European Badminton Championships
According to НОК: Ukrainian women's doubles pair Polina Bugrova and Yevheniia Kantemir secured a bronze medal at the 2026 European Badminton Championships, held from April 6 to 12 in Huelva, Spain. This achievement marks the first time Ukraine has ever won a medal at this prestigious continental tournament. Badminton is a sport with traditionally strong European nations, making this breakthrough particularly significant for Ukraine.
Seeded third for the competition, Bugrova and Kantemir successfully advanced through the quarterfinals. There, they defeated the seventh-seeded English pair of Abigail Harris and Lizzie Tolman in straight sets, 2:0 (21:19, 21:17). This victory guaranteed them a spot in the semifinals and, crucially, a place on the podium.
Semifinal Finish and a National Record
In the semifinal, the Ukrainian pair faced the top-seeded Bulgarian sisters, Gabriela and Stefani Stoeva, ultimately losing 0:2 (12:21, 3:21). Despite this loss, their overall performance at the championship set a new national record for Ukraine in badminton.
This was only the duo's second appearance together at the European Championships, having reached the quarterfinals in the 2025 edition. Their bronze medal in 2026 demonstrates clear progress and a growing competitive edge. The success of Bugrova and Kantemir highlights the rising potential of Ukrainian badminton on the international stage and could inspire further development of the sport within the country.
