How Ukraine’s Air Defense Performed in June 2026

According to Главком: Throughout June 2026, Ukraine’s air defense system showed remarkable effectiveness, intercepting roughly 89–90% of all aerial threats launched by Russian forces. According to reports, the enemy deployed nearly 6,000 drones and missiles, of which Ukrainian troops managed to shoot down about 5,300. The highest success rates came against drones, with 90% intercepted, while the lowest were against ballistic missiles, which were neutralized at a rate of just 40%.

Major Attacks on June 2 and June 15

The largest waves of attacks occurred on the nights of June 2 and June 15. During the June 2 assault, Russian forces used:

  • 8 Zircon missiles,
  • 33 Iskander-M ballistic missiles,
  • 32 Kh-101 and Kalibr cruise missiles,
  • over 650 attack drones.

In response, Ukrainian forces shot down 92% of the drones and 90% of the cruise missiles, while intercepting 11 out of 41 ballistic missiles.

On the night of June 15, Russian troops launched:

  • 6 Zircon missiles,
  • 34 Iskander-M ballistic missiles,
  • 30 Kh-101 and Iskander-K cruise missiles,
  • 611 attack drones.

During this attack, Ukraine’s air defense intercepted all cruise missiles, 95% of drones, and half of the ballistic targets.

Experts note that effectively countering ballistic missiles requires modern systems such as the Patriot. Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov emphasized that

'to shoot down ballistic missiles, you need modern missile defense systems like the Patriot.'

However, he added that

'launchers alone are not enough-a constant supply of interceptor missiles is critical.'

Yuriy Ihnat also pointed out that 'global production of such munitions cannot keep up with Ukraine’s needs,' and he called on partners to release additional stocks from their warehouses to ensure defense effectiveness. So, despite high interception rates, existing challenges require urgent solutions to strengthen Ukraine’s air defense.

The strong interception numbers highlight significant achievements by Ukraine’s air defense, but a shortage of modern systems and interceptor missiles remains a serious issue. Given the relentless attacks from the enemy, it is essential not only to maintain current systems but also to upgrade them and replenish supplies. Ukrainian military appeals for additional resources from international partners underscore the critical role of global support in safeguarding Ukraine’s national security.

As Ukraine's air defense continues to adapt to evolving threats, the challenges posed by a shortage of critical missile systems have prompted changes in operational tactics. Recent reports indicate that crews are modifying their strategies to maximize effectiveness despite limited resources.
