In a Single Day, Ukrainian Drones Strike 11 Vessels from Russia's Shadow Fleet
Operation Molochka: Targeting Russia's Maritime Logistics
According to ХВИЛЯ: On July 16, drones from Ukraine's Unmanned Systems Forces struck 11 ships belonging to Russia's shadow fleet. The attack hit:
- five oil tankers,
- one gas carrier tanker,
- three dry cargo ships,
- two tugboats.
Over the ten days of Operation Molochka, a total of 147 vessels have been struck in the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov. Specifically, on July 16, ten targets were hit in the Black Sea, and one more in the Sea of Azov. This operation highlights Ukraine's growing capability to disrupt Russian maritime operations that circumvent international sanctions.
Goals and Strategy Behind the Operation
The aim of Operation Molochka is to cripple Russia's logistics network that operates outside of sanctions. During this campaign, 117 vessels were struck in the Sea of Azov, while 30 were hit in the Black Sea. The July 16 mission was carried out by pilots from the 9th Battalion Kairos of the 414th Brigade "Mad Yar's Birds," the 1st Separate Center of the SBS, and the 20th K-2 Brigade.

This strategy does not involve sinking ships; instead, it leaves them adrift, which can severely complicate the enemy's logistics. Robert "Mad Yar" Brovdi also emphasized: “We will stand. Moscow will fall, Molochka is in action. We will feed and rebuild Crimea.”
Operation Molochka showcases a new approach by Ukrainian forces, focusing on degrading the enemy's logistical capabilities without directly destroying vessels. This method, aimed at creating supply and transport disruptions, could significantly impact Russia's operational effectiveness in the region. Continued actions of this kind may force both sides to adjust their strategies, given the emerging challenges in naval warfare.
The recent operations have not only targeted individual vessels but have also contributed to a significant cumulative impact on Russia's naval capabilities. For instance, in a series of coordinated strikes, Ukrainian drones have disabled 159 Russian ships across both the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov, underscoring the effectiveness of Ukraine's drone warfare strategy and its implications for maritime logistics in the region.
