Українські музеї встановили нові рекорди за фінансовими показниками, досягнувши неймовірних 14 мільярдів гривень у 2025 році.

Museum Revenue in Ukraine Reaches New Heights in 2025

According to Главком: In 2025, Ukrainian museums collectively generated a record-breaking 14 billion UAH, a 34% increase compared to 2024. This surge highlights a significant recovery and growth in the country's cultural sector. The top-performing state museum was the National Museum-Memorial 'Prison on Lontskoho,' which brought in 7.4 billion UAH. Across Ukraine, there are 108 legal entities primarily operating as museums, with 56 under state ownership and 52 privately owned.

By the end of 2025, the museum sector reported a total financial result of 14.1 billion UAH, up from 10.5 billion UAH in the previous year. Four cultural institutions each earned more than 1 billion UAH, including:

  • The State Historical and Cultural Reserve 'Trypillian Culture' with 2.9 billion UAH
  • Okhtyrka City Local History Museum with 1.9 billion UAH
  • Brody Historical and Local History Museum with 1.3 billion UAH
  • Chernihiv Historical Museum named after V.V. Tarnovsky with 20.9 million UAH

Cultural Worker Salaries and International Context

The private museum sector also saw financial growth. The 'Memory of the Jewish People and the Holocaust in Ukraine' Museum, established by the Dnipro Jewish Community Charitable Foundation, earned 23.9 million UAH. Other private museums, such as the Upside Down House (9 million UAH), the M.L. Shustov Cognac Museum (8.3 million UAH), the Museum-Gallery 'Formation of the Ukrainian Nation' (3 million UAH), and the Vikcars Museum (2.9 million UAH), made notable contributions to the overall financial results.

Despite these revenue gains, cultural worker salaries remain relatively low. As of January 1, 2026, the actual salary for a cultural worker ranges from 8,000 to 10,000 UAH before taxes, which is just 43% of the national average wage. At the end of 2025, the average salary for librarians, archivists, and museum staff was 12,200 UAH, equivalent to 60.1% of the country's average economic indicator.

For instance, in Vinnytsia, research staff earn between 8,647 and 9,500 UAH, while museum attendants in Kyiv make 7,000 to 8,000 UAH. At the National Museum of the History of Ukraine in the Second World War, some technical specialists can earn up to 30,000 UAH.

International Museum Day, celebrated annually on May 18, was established by the International Council of Museums (ICOM) during its 11th General Conference in 1977.

The increase in museum revenue signals a recovery in Ukraine's cultural sector after a period of economic hardship. High income levels, especially among state museums, likely stem from rising visitor numbers and more active cultural programming, underscoring the growing importance of museums in public life. However, despite these positive financial trends, the persistent issue of low wages for cultural workers remains a concern, potentially affecting their motivation and the quality of their work.
