IOC's Ban on 'Memorial Helmet' Draws Solidarity from Ukrainian Olympians for Heraskevych
Ukrainian Athletes Rally Behind Skeleton Racer Vladyslav Heraskevych for 2026 Games
According to Главком: Ukrainian competitors at the 2026 Winter Olympics have voiced their support for skeleton athlete Vladyslav Heraskevych, whom the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has barred from using a 'memorial helmet'. The helmet bears images of Ukrainian athletes who have died as a result of Russian aggression. In a show of solidarity with Heraskevych, alpine skier Dmytro Shepuiuk displayed a message on his glove for the cameras reading: 'Ukrainian heroes are with us.' This incident highlights the ongoing tensions between the IOC's neutrality rules and athletes' personal expressions of remembrance.
Ukrainian luger Olena Smaha, who has made similar gestures in the past, has also backed Vladyslav Heraskevych. Furthermore, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine has sent an appeal to the IOC in support of Heraskevych, a document that garnered backing from 268 members of parliament.
'I believe there simply aren't enough black ribbons to honor all the Ukrainian athletes killed by Russia. The 'memorial helmet' does not violate any rules and, in my conviction, does not contradict the provisions of the Olympic Charter. This is not a political act – it is a tribute to fallen athletes, and we have the right to speak about it. I wore this helmet the day before yesterday, yesterday, today, and I will continue to wear it – in training and at future competitions.' Vladyslav Heraskevych
The controversy over the 'memorial helmet' underscores the current challenges faced by Ukrainian athletes on the international stage, particularly in the context of the war in Ukraine. The support for Heraskevych from fellow athletes and politicians demonstrates a unity and determination to honor the memory of the deceased, which has become a significant aspect of national identity during the conflict.
This event may also influence future IOC decisions regarding rules related to symbolic gestures and memorials in a sporting context.
