Ukrainian Poacher Catches 40-Kilogram Catfish in Poland, Gets Deported
Illegal Fishing Incident in Poland
According to Главком: A 57-year-old Ukrainian citizen illegally caught a 40-kilogram catfish from Lake Balaton in Warsaw in late May. The fish, which had lived in the lake for about 20 years, measured 180 cm in length. After being caught, the catfish survived and was released into another body of water within Warsaw. The same man who caught it carried out the release in front of witnesses.
The event took place in the Gocław neighborhood, where two men were fishing from a pedal boat. After the catch, one of the men stuffed the fish into a car trunk, drawing attention from onlookers. Poland's Border Guard responded to the incident and deported the man to Ukraine. He also received a five-year ban from entering the Schengen Zone.
Poaching Problem in Ukraine
The man was accused of transporting fish caught during a protected period, as well as cruelty to the fish during transport without access to water. This case is not isolated. Similar poaching incidents have been reported in Ukraine. For example, in the Kyiv region, one poacher caught:
- 29 crayfish
- eight silver crucian carp
- six perch
- six white bream
- three roach
- two pikeperch
- two ruffe
Additionally, in Hostomel, a 41-year-old man was caught illegally fishing during the spawning season. The state damages in the Hostomel case amount to over 158,000 Ukrainian hryvnias. These events highlight the seriousness of the poaching problem in Ukraine and the need for stricter control over water resources.
This incident in Poland reflects not only poaching issues within Ukraine but also raises concerns about the conservation of water resources across Europe. Poaching, which damages ecosystems, requires effective measures from states to prevent similar cases in the future. In Ukraine, illegal fishing remains a pressing issue, underscoring the need to strengthen the protection of water bodies and regulate fishing activities, especially during spawning periods.
The issue of illegal fishing is not limited to Poland, as similar incidents have been reported in Ukraine, highlighting the urgent need for enhanced conservation efforts. For instance, recent actions against poachers targeting endangered species in the Danube demonstrate the broader implications of this problem across Europe.
