Ukrainian Comedian Oleksandr Ellert Secures a U.S. Green Card
Oleksandr Ellert Receives a U.S. Green Card
According to РБК-Україна — Lite: Comedian Oleksandr Ellert has been granted a U.S. green card through a program designed for individuals with professional achievements. The application process took roughly two years and came with substantial financial costs-Ellert spent several thousand dollars on legal fees. His submission package included a detailed account of his career journey, spanning from performances in school KVN to his work as a writer at the renowned comedy studio 'Kvartal 95'.
While waiting for the green card, Ellert lost out on certain work opportunities, including some shows and a European stand-up tour. Following the start of the full-scale invasion, Oleksandr Ellert relocated to the United States. He has returned to Ukraine several times, but according to his friend and fellow comedian Andriy Rybak, his departure was reportedly linked to health issues.
Ellert's Experience and Plans
Sharing his insights, Ellert emphasized that success often starts with small steps-like joining KVN in the eighth grade while impersonating Verka Serduchka and winning the school league.
“The mayor and the factory director give you a certificate for that, which you’d better not throw away-who knows, it might come in handy,” the comedian noted.
Despite the challenges, Ellert has no regrets about his path and intends to continue his career in the U.S., now performing in English.
“I regret nothing. I’m moving forward doing what I love, but now in English. Good luck to everyone, and may you collect as many diplomas as possible,” he added.
Oleksandr Ellert's green card acquisition highlights the importance of international mobility for creative professionals, especially amid the current challenges facing Ukrainian artists. Relocating to the U.S. opens up new avenues for career growth, yet it also demands adaptation to a new environment-a process that can be daunting. Ellert serves as an example of how persistence and talent can help overcome obstacles and discover fresh outlets for self-expression. His situation also reflects a broader trend among Ukrainian creatives seeking opportunities abroad in light of instability at home.
