Ukraine's Grid Operator Denies Power Export Rumors Amid Severe Energy Shortage

Ukrenergo refutes rumors about electricity export
Оператор електричних мереж України спростував чутки про експорт енергії на фоні критичної нестачі електрики в країні.

Ukraine's Power Export Situation Clarified

According to Главком: Ukraine's national power grid operator, Ukrenergo, has refuted rumors that the country is exporting electricity. The company states that no commercial exports are currently possible due to a severe power generation deficit within Ukraine's energy system. This critical shortage is a direct result of Russia's sustained, large-scale attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure, which began in October of last year. These attacks have damaged at least 80% of the nation's power facilities, making it difficult to reliably meet domestic demand.

Focus on Domestic Needs and Technical Flows

Ukrenergo emphasizes that all domestic power plants are operating solely to cover Ukraine's internal consumption needs. While Ukraine's grid is integrated into the wider European network and remains connected to the systems of Moldova, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, and Poland, this enables only technical electricity flows between countries, not commercial exports.

'Data that is often misinterpreted on social media as evidence of exports does not indicate the presence of commercial export.' - Ukrenergo

The company explains that these technical flows are a natural phenomenon governed by the laws of physics within interconnected grids. Such flows are typically minor, and the overall balance between export and import of electricity is always close to zero. Ukraine's energy crisis is part of a broader pattern of Russian attacks on civilian infrastructure, which has devastated the country's power generation capacity.

Additionally, electricity transit across Ukrainian territory from one state to another may also be recorded as a physical flow. Ukrenergo urges the public to verify information about electricity exports on official platforms like Entso-E, the European JAO auction platform, and the NEC Ukrenergo Auction Platform to avoid misinformation.

The situation in Ukraine's energy sector remains critical due to ongoing hostilities, which continue to severely impact infrastructure. Ukrenergo's denial of export rumors underscores the priority of securing power for the population and industry amid the war. It also highlights the need for careful information monitoring, as false claims can mislead the public and cause unnecessary alarm.
