Ukrainian Railways to Source Half Its Winter Power from Abroad, Easing Grid Strain
Power Imports to Alleviate Pressure on the National Grid
According to Главком: In a move to relieve pressure on Ukraine's power system, Ukrainian Railways (Ukrzaliznytsia) will begin importing electricity. This winter, the state-owned company plans to source approximately 50% of its total consumption from abroad. This directive comes from the government, which has also tasked Naftogaz and the Ukroboronprom defense concern with increasing their electricity imports to support the national grid.
Ensuring a Stable Power Supply
To maintain a stable electricity supply, more than 40 emergency repair crews from Ukrainian Railways are operating daily in Kyiv. Notably, energy workers have successfully restored power to all of the capital's critical infrastructure sites, highlighting ongoing efforts to sustain Ukraine's energy stability amidst the ongoing conflict. This winter's strategy is a direct response to the severe strain on Ukraine's energy infrastructure, which has been a repeated target of military attacks.
Therefore, importing electricity will be a crucial step in reducing the load on the country's energy system during the high-demand winter season. The press service of Ukrzaliznytsia stated that the company is initiating power imports 'on the instruction of the Headquarters for the Liquidation of Emergency Situations in the Energy Sector' to unburden the Ukrainian grid. This measure aims to ensure a reliable electricity supply throughout Ukraine this winter.
Ukraine's decision to import power addresses the growing demand for electricity, which peaks during the colder months. In the context of an energy crisis intensified by warfare and infrastructure damage, importing electricity is viewed as a necessary, though temporary, solution to maintain system stability. It also reflects the concerted efforts of the state and energy companies to manage crisis situations and uphold the operation of critical national infrastructure.
