Ukrzaliznytsia to Introduce Dynamic Pricing for Premium Train Tickets
Ukrzaliznytsia Adopts Dynamic Pricing Model
According to ХВИЛЯ: Ukrzaliznytsia, Ukraine's state railway operator, is set to launch a dynamic pricing system for its premium services, specifically for SV (luxury sleeper) carriages and first-class Intercity+ seats. This move is a common practice among global transport providers to better match supply with demand. The new model will adjust ticket prices based on several variables, including seasonal demand, the day of the week, how far in advance the ticket is purchased, and the current occupancy of the train. The system is expected to go live in approximately one month, while fares for standard sleeper (platskart), coupe, and second-class Intercity+ travel will remain fixed.
Key Factors Influencing Ticket Prices
Oleksandr Pertsovskyi, Chairman of the Board of Ukrzaliznytsia, explained that special coefficients will be applied to a base fare to determine the final price. The first of four key factors is seasonality. The carrier will define 16 distinct time periods with varying rates. During low-demand periods with 70-80% occupancy, tickets will be discounted with a coefficient of 0.8. In peak months like August, prices will rise with a coefficient of 1.2.
- The second factor is the day of the week. Traveling on Tuesday or Wednesday will be cheapest, while Friday and Sunday journeys will be the most expensive.
- Third is the timing of the purchase. The earlier a passenger buys a ticket, the better the price. Pertsovskyi noted that currently, nearly 30% of passengers buy tickets on the day of travel or just two days prior.
- The fourth factor is the real-time occupancy of the specific train: if a train is 90-100% booked, the price will increase, whereas available seats close to departure could lead to price reductions.
This new system will allow passengers to choose more economical times to travel and to plan their journeys further in advance.
The introduction of dynamic pricing represents a significant step for Ukrzaliznytsia in adapting to modern economic conditions and passenger needs. This approach is designed to optimize train occupancy and improve the company's financial performance. A core part of the strategy is to incentivize passengers to plan ahead, which could help alleviate pressure on ticket sales during peak periods.
