Ukrainian Railways Adds New Trains and Upgrades Seven Routes to Daily Service
Ukrainian Railways Expands Operations with Additional Trains
According to Главком: In response to shifting passenger demand, Ukrainian Railways is launching extra trains and converting seven popular routes to run daily. Since the start of summer, the company has observed a rising demand for rail travel, prompting it to reduce carriages on less popular routes and reassign them to high-demand services. This strategy allows Ukrainian Railways to introduce new trains and increase carriage capacity on the most sought-after routes, despite ongoing fleet shortages.
Routes and New Services
The seven train pairs being upgraded to daily service include the following routes:
- Train No. 4/3: Uzhhorod - Dnipro
- Train No. 86/85: Lviv - Zaporizhzhia
- Train No. 128/127: Lviv - Kryvyi Rih, Zaporizhzhia
- Train No. 78/77: Kovel - Odesa
- Train No. 88/87: Kovel - Dnipro
- Train No. 7/8: Kharkiv - Odesa
- Train No. 121/122: Mykolaiv - Kyiv
Additionally, Ukrainian Railways is resuming service on Train No. 143/144: Sumy - Rakhiv. This route will once again link Northern Slobozhanshchyna and Sivershchyna with western Ukraine, providing direct connections between Sumy, Bilopillia, and Konotop to Vinnytsia, Khmelnytskyi, Ternopil, Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk, Yaremche, and Vorokhta. The company has also introduced an additional train, No. 227/228: Kyiv - Chernivtsi, which will operate every other day via Vinnytsia, Khmelnytskyi, Ternopil, Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk, and Kolomyia.
Train No. 227/228: Kyiv - Chernivtsi will include second-class sleeper cars (platskart), compartment cars (kupe), and first-class sleeper cars (SV). Tickets will go on sale 5 to 20 days before departure. During the summer season, Ukrainian Railways expects a significant shortage of seats, driven by extensive damage to rolling stock from Russian shelling and a concurrent surge in rail travel demand.
“Since the start of summer, Ukrainian Railways has been tracking changes in passenger flow and responding quickly. Specifically, the company is reducing the number of carriages on less popular routes and reassigning them to services with the highest demand.” - Ukrainian Railways Press Office
These measures highlight Ukrainian Railways’ ability to adapt to evolving travel demand, which could improve the accessibility of transport services for the public. The restoration of routes and launch of new services align with traveler needs, fostering better regional connections-a key factor for economic growth and citizen mobility.
As Ukrainian Railways expands its services to meet the growing demand for rail travel, it's important to note that this surge in passenger numbers has also led to a significant ticket shortage this summer. With extensive damage to rolling stock, many travelers may face challenges in securing seats.
