Major Government Reshuffle in Ukraine

According to ХВИЛЯ: Ukraine’s cabinet has undergone a significant overhaul, with Serhiy Koretskyi appointed as the new Prime Minister and Yevhen Khmara named Acting Minister of Defense. Khmara, a Major General, previously led the Alpha special operations unit within the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU). President Volodymyr Zelensky announced these changes during his evening address to the nation.

Koretskyi, who previously held roles at Ukrnafta and Naftogaz, has been tasked with preparing the government for the upcoming winter. Zelensky emphasized the urgency of this mission, stating:

“Regardless of the scenario, Ukraine must be fully ready to protect lives, safeguard its people, and ensure we get through the winter.”

New Ministers’ Responsibilities

As Acting Defense Minister, Khmara is now responsible for overseeing long-range operations conducted by Ukraine’s security forces. He previously managed similar operations within the SBU, where he earned a reputation for effectiveness. According to Zelensky, the Alpha unit consistently achieves the highest number of successful strikes against occupiers on the front lines each month. The President also discussed with Koretskyi the legal steps needed to appoint an acting foreign minister, and planned to consult with Kyrylo Budanov and the diplomatic team about restructuring Ukraine’s foreign missions.

Amid these developments, a new defense package worth €300 million has been announced jointly by the United Kingdom and Sweden. These funds are intended to accelerate the deployment of Gripen fighter jets in Ukrainian airspace. The visit of UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer to Ukraine, along with Zelensky’s meeting with Turkey’s Foreign Minister, underscores the international community’s ongoing support during this challenging period. Ankara has confirmed its readiness to do everything possible to facilitate a meeting of leaders aimed at ending the war.

In a related political move, the Verkhovna Rada voted to dismiss the government led by Yulia Svyrydenko, marking another key event in the country’s political landscape.

These personnel changes come at a time of intense international negotiations and aid, highlighting the critical need for stability in Ukraine amid the ongoing war. The appointments signal Ukraine’s determination to prepare effectively for winter conditions and bolster its defense capabilities. External backing-particularly from the UK and Sweden-may also play a pivotal role in ensuring the nation’s security during this crucial period.

The recent cabinet reshuffle in Ukraine not only highlights the urgent need for effective leadership as winter approaches but also coincides with significant changes within the country's diplomatic ranks. As President Zelensky continues to adapt Ukraine's foreign relations strategy, the appointment and removal of ambassadors may further influence how Ukraine navigates international support during this critical period.
