Situation in Ceuta and the Reaction of the European Commission

According to Укрінформ — Мігранти: European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, in a letter dated August 3, approved the actions of Spain and Morocco during the migration crisis in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, where tens of thousands of migrants arrived. She called on the European Union to strengthen control at the external borders. On July 31, nearly 50,000 people crossed the border from Morocco; of these, more than 48,300 returned.

In her letter, von der Leyen praised the actions of the Spanish and Moroccan authorities during the influx of 60,000 migrants into Ceuta. The letter was a response to a request from Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, in which he criticized the biases and selfishness of other European leaders. Von der Leyen stated that this incident should serve as a catalyst for strengthening migration control in the EU, as, in her opinion,

“both the Spanish and Moroccan authorities handled it effectively and successfully prevented the illegal movement of migrants to mainland Spain and Europe”

Call for Coordination of Actions

Leaders from 22 EU member states also called for an immediate and coordinated response to the situation in Ceuta. The Spanish Ministry of the Interior reported that on July 31, nearly 50,000 migrants crossed the border from Morocco to Ceuta in a single day. The mayor of Ceuta confirmed that between three to five thousand migrants remain in the city. Von der Leyen emphasized that

“this incident demonstrates that we need to make greater efforts to strengthen our borders at critically important points – both through careful monitoring and by using physical barriers where necessary”

The situation in Ceuta highlights the relevance of the migration issue in Europe, which requires coordinated actions from EU member states. Acknowledging the effectiveness of the actions of Spain and Morocco could serve as a basis for developing new migration control strategies.
