Everything through artificial intelligence: US tech companies have laid off nearly 100,000 workers
According to glavcom.ua: Some positions are disappearing because this work is now performed by artificial intelligence (AI). Others are being cut so employers can reallocate resources to AI development, infrastructure, and research. The year began with small layoffs: Microsoft parted ways with some employees in the gaming division and sales department. In February, Meta got rid of 'inefficient' employees but increased hiring in departments related to AI; AI was the reason for layoffs at Workday and Salesforce. In March, CrowdStrike reduced its workforce by 5%, citing AI deployment; at the same time, part of the staff at Block resigned – analysts believe AI was one of the reasons here as well.
By mid-2025, nearly 94,000 employees of the largest technology companies in the US have lost their jobs. This is not just another round of optimization and cost savings – players have begun to transform their workforce in accordance with the realities of artificial intelligence. This is stated in the corporate blog of the staffing company Final Round AI, writes 'Glavkom'.
- software developers are most often at risk of layoffs;
- HR specialists are at high risk of dismissal;
- human support for customers is becoming less in demand;
- people are increasingly less involved in content creation;
- AI is displacing data analysts;
- companies are also parting ways with middle managers.
New requirements for technology sector specialists
In May, due to AI, Microsoft again conducted layoffs, as well as IBM, Amazon, and the educational technology company Chegg. In June, Google reduced the size of its smart TV software development department but increased funding for Bard and Gemini projects; at that time, AI was the reason for layoffs at Canva, Bumble, and several Disney divisions, including the streaming platform Hulu. July has already marked another wave of layoffs at Microsoft, and the same is expected at TikTok in the near future.
AI-related layoffs are typically linked to three main mechanisms: AI replaces workers performing repetitive tasks; companies redistribute their workforce to allocate resources for AI development; finally, AI enables people to do more with less cost. It is important to learn how to effectively apply AI. Workers who have grasped these theses and learned to use new skills to their advantage are more likely to remain in demand.
The US is witnessing a wave of layoffs in technology companies related to the reorientation towards AI development. Workforce resources are being redistributed, and some functions are already performed by AI. This poses a challenge for technology sector specialists to learn how to effectively interact with new technologies to remain competitive in the job market.
