Fish listed in the Red Book is disappearing in Ukraine: explanation by ichthyologist
According to glavcom.ua: Climate in Ukraine is undergoing significant changes, which is reflected in the diversity of fish. According to ichthyologist Yulia Kutsokon from the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, the changes are caused by hot summers, warmer winters, and a decrease in precipitation, leading to the extinction of some fish species.
When we talk about climate, it's a long-term process that is being monitored. We have abnormally dry summers with high temperatures and mild, low-snow winters. Many of our rivers derive their water from precipitation.
One of the negative factors is the shallowing of water bodies due to climate change. Dry years and reduced precipitation limit the habitats for fish. This leads to a decline in fish populations, emphasizes Kutsokon.
Shift of fish distribution northward
Not all fish can adapt to temperature changes. For example, the river minnow, which is active in winter, is spreading northward due to warming. Since 2009, the river minnow has been listed in the Red Book of Ukraine as a vulnerable species.
Climate change significantly affects fish in Ukraine, altering their ranges and populations. This poses certain challenges for the survival of some species and may have serious consequences for the ecosystems of the country's water bodies.
