Ukrainian Air Force Logistics Commander Remains in Custody Over $36 Million Embezzlement Case
Appeals Court Upholds Detention Order
According to Главком: The Appeals Chamber of Ukraine's High Anti-Corruption Court has upheld the pre-trial detention of Andrii Ukrainets, the Logistics Commander for the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. He is accused of involvement in a scheme to embezzle state funds allocated for building protective shelters for combat aircraft, causing losses to the state budget of 1.4 billion hryvnias (approximately $36 million USD). This case is part of a broader anti-corruption drive within Ukraine's defense sector during the ongoing war.
The decision was made on March 9, and Ukrainets will remain in custody until April 25. An alternative to detention was a bail amount of 7 million hryvnias, but this was not posted. Appeals from both the prosecution and the defense were dismissed, making the ruling final and not subject to further cassation appeal.
Corruption Scheme Uncovered
The embezzlement scheme was uncovered by the Office of the Prosecutor General and Ukraine's Security Service (SBU). In a related development, on February 27, the head of the SBU's department in the Zhytomyr region, Volodymyr Kompaniichenko, was also ordered to be held in custody for 60 days with bail set at 6,980,000 hryvnias.
This case underscores the critical importance of fighting corruption in Ukraine, especially during wartime when every budgetary expenditure is vital for national defense. The situation with Andrii Ukrainets reflects a wider trend of increased scrutiny over state finances and the prosecution of officials who abuse their authority for personal gain.
