Domestic cheese producers are losing market: why Ukrainians are buying European cheese

Domestic cheese producers are losing market
Вітчизняні виробники сиру стикаються з проблемами: причини, через які українці обирають європейські сири.

Decline in demand for domestic cheeses in Ukraine

According to ХВИЛЯ: In Ukraine, cheese producers are finishing the year with a decrease in demand for domestic products. This phenomenon is caused by competition from cheaper European imports, leading to a reduction in production volumes. The output of hard and semi-hard cheeses in Ukraine has decreased, reflecting a shift in consumer preferences.

The problem of rising prices for domestic cheeses also affects the choice of Ukrainians. For example, the price for high-quality cheese has exceeded 400 UAH per kilogram. Among the most popular hard and semi-hard cheeses, the prices are:

  • 'Zvenyhorodskyi' - 380 - 460 UAH per kilogram;
  • 'Holland' - 380 - 460 UAH per kilogram;
  • 'Gouda' - 380 - 460 UAH per kilogram;
  • 'Royal' cheese (with large holes) - from 430 to 510 UAH per kilogram;
  • Aged cheeses such as 'Parmesan' - from 650 UAH per kilogram.

There is also a different pricing for brined cheeses and soft varieties. The price for:

  • brine cheese and feta is 280 - 350 UAH per kilogram;
  • mozzarella (in brine) - 340 - 400 UAH per kilogram;
  • suluguni - 320 - 390 UAH per kilogram;
  • cottage cheese:
    • 5% fat - 190 - 220 UAH per kilogram;
    • 9% fat - 230 - 260 UAH per kilogram;
    • fat homemade cheese (block) - 270 - 310 UAH per kilogram.

Impact on producers and food security

Thus, the decline in demand for domestic cheeses in Ukraine is due not only to rising prices but also to the availability of European products offered at competitive prices. This situation threatens local producers who are forced to adapt to new market conditions.

The decline in demand for Ukrainian cheeses may have long-term consequences for the country's food security, as producers may reduce production volumes or even close businesses. In response to this, it is important for government agencies and producer associations to consider supporting domestic producers through subsidy programs or promoting local products. This could help strengthen the position of Ukrainian cheese in the market and enhance its competitiveness amid import competition.
