New entry rules for the EU: what awaits Ukrainians at the border from October 12
From October 12, new rules for crossing the EU's external borders for citizens from other countries, such as Ukraine, will take effect. This is due to the implementation of the Entry/Exit System (EES), which replaces traditional passport stamps with electronic data. Anyone entering the Schengen zone for a short period will now go through this system.
From October 12, new rules for crossing external borders for citizens of third countries, including Ukraine, will come into effect in the European Union. This is related to the implementation of the Entry/Exit System (EES), which automates the collection of travelers' biometric data. This was reported by 'Hlavkom' citing the Embassy of Ukraine in Poland.
What is the EES system and who does it apply to
The EES (Entry/Exit System) is a new automated database that will store information about border crossings upon entry and exit. This system will be used for citizens of countries that are not EU members who stay in the Schengen zone for up to 90 days. Information will be entered into an electronic database instead of passport stamps.
Upon the first entry into the EU through the EES system, travelers must have their photograph taken, provide fingerprints (for those over 12 years old), and submit passport data.
Timetable for full implementation
October 12 is just the beginning of the work of the EES. The full implementation of the system is planned for April 10, 2026, when all passport stamps will be replaced by entries in the database. Each EU country will independently determine when to introduce the system at its borders.
It is also noted that Ukrainian refugees are ready to return home if the country is provided with security and political reforms. Surveys among Ukrainians in Europe have shown that the greatest demand is for improving the labor market situation and fighting corruption for the possibility of returning home.
Starting from October 12, new rules for crossing the external borders of the EU for citizens of third countries, including Ukrainian citizens, will come into effect through the implementation and automation of the EES system. This system will replace traditional passport stamps with electronic data and allow for better control over travelers. It is also important that Ukrainian refugees in Europe seek improvements in the situation in Ukraine to be able to return home.
