Ukraine Adopts European Fuel Labeling Standards

According to ХВИЛЯ: Beginning July 1, gas stations across Ukraine will switch to a new fuel classification system aligned with European Union standards. This update introduces categories such as E5, E10, and B7, reflecting a greater incorporation of bio-components in fuel blends.

Breaking Down the New Fuel Categories

Each category comes with specific specifications:

• E5 – gasoline containing up to 5% bioethanol;
• E10 – gasoline with a bioethanol share of up to 10%;
• B7 – diesel fuel mixed with up to 7% biodiesel.

These labels have been in use across the European Union since 2018. In the EU, gasoline categories like E5, E10, and E85 are displayed inside a circle, while diesel designations such as B7, B10, and XTL appear within a square. For gaseous fuels-including H2, CNG, LPG, and LNG-diamond-shaped symbols are employed.

It is worth noting that most vehicles manufactured after 2011 are compatible with E10 gasoline. Owners of older cars with carburetor engines are advised to stick with E5 fuel. To determine whether a vehicle can run on the new fuel types, drivers should check the technical documentation, the sticker inside the fuel flap, or consult the manufacturer’s recommendations.

This move to revamp fuel labeling marks a significant step in Ukraine’s efforts to align with European norms, potentially cutting harmful emissions and making automotive fuels more environmentally friendly.
