Attempt on Fico: convicted writer appeals sentence of 21 years
According to glavcom.ua: A 72-year-old Slovak writer Juraj Cintula has appealed the sentence in the case of the attempted assassination of Slovakia's Prime Minister Robert Fico in 2024. He was sentenced to 21 years in prison. This information is reported by TV Noviny.
Maria Gorakova, representative of the Supreme Court of the Slovak Republic, stated that Cintula has filed an appeal against the sentence. The Specialized Criminal Court of Slovakia sentenced the writer to 21 years in prison for attempting to assassinate the country's Prime Minister Robert Fico.
Reaction to the verdict
It is known that the defense requested the court to find Cintula guilty of assaulting a public official rather than terrorism, but the court made a different decision. The judge found the writer guilty of terrorism, considering the intent of the attack. Cintula's age, health condition, and behavior also influenced the sentence. The court's decision can be appealed to the country's Supreme Court, and Cintula himself stated his intention to file an appeal.
In May of last year, the writer attacked the Prime Minister, injuring him. Fico managed to return to work in July of the same year after extensive treatment following surgeries.
