Ukraine’s Expectations for European Union Membership

According to Главком: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has signaled that major political decisions from the European Union regarding Ukraine’s accession are imminent. Speaking at a joint press conference with Estonian President Alar Karis, he confirmed that Ukraine has fulfilled all prerequisites to launch six negotiation clusters. Zelensky urged the EU to adopt its 21st sanctions package against Russia, stressing that new measures should target Moscow’s shadow fleet. June and July of this year were highlighted as decisive months for these developments.

Maintaining Pressure on Russia

President Zelensky emphasized the need to sustain pressure on Russia.

“There are no obstacles, and it is crucial that this progress continues-that the clusters are opened and that the Russians also see it. They must see that Europe keeps its promises and does not abandon its European interests,” he stated.

He also noted that “Russia’s budget is stagnating. We must keep up the pressure and push Russia onto a diplomatic track.”

Detailing Russia’s losses, Zelensky reported that the country suffers over 30,000 military personnel killed or severely wounded each month. Ukrainian strikes on Russian logistics, oil refining, and military production continue to degrade Moscow’s capabilities. He also pointed to fuel and communication shortages in the temporarily occupied Crimea and regions of Russia.

Alar Karis, for his part, called on the European Union to accelerate the negotiation process and open all clusters this summer. He stressed that June and July could be critical for the future of Ukraine-EU relations, a timeline also reflected in upcoming EU, G7, and NATO summits.

The statements from President Zelensky and the Estonian leader underscore the urgency and importance of continued EU support for Ukraine.
