Zelenskyy Seeks to Involve Turkey and Middle Eastern Nations in Ukraine Peace Talks
Expanding the Peace Process
According to Главком: In his evening address on February 21, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced he has directed his government to seek the involvement of new countries in the peace process, specifically Turkey and Middle Eastern nations. This diplomatic push comes as Ukraine continues to seek broad international support for its vision of a just peace. Zelenskyy emphasized the critical need for close coordination of these efforts with European partners and has scheduled meetings with European leaders for the coming week.
The head of Ukraine's negotiating team, Rustem Umerov, has been tasked by the President with working to bring Turkey and Middle Eastern states into the war settlement process. Zelenskyy stressed that coordination with European allies is a vital component of these negotiations. In his address, the President also stated that Ukraine is prepared to do everything necessary to achieve peace, despite the fact that the latest talks in Geneva failed to produce a common position on territorial issues.
Talks Between Ukraine, the US, and Russia
Negotiations involving Ukraine, the United States, and Russia have concluded. Head of the President's Office, Kyrylo Budanov, noted the discussions were difficult but important. White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre reported that significant progress was made during the trilateral talks in Geneva. However, the next meeting to discuss ending the war will again be held in Switzerland.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed his firm belief that it is crucial for the negotiation process to be based in Europe. He also noted that Ukraine is closer to finalizing agreements on military matters than on political ones.
“My meetings with European partners are already scheduled for next week. We will coordinate in detail so that Europe is involved in all processes and only grows stronger,” – Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
The move to involve new countries signals an intensification of Ukraine's diplomatic efforts amid the ongoing conflict. Turkey and Middle Eastern nations, given their strategic positions and regional influence, could play a significant role in shaping new approaches to ending the war. The emphasis on coordination with European partners underscores Ukraine's aim to weave international support directly into the negotiation framework, which may help achieve a more stable and lasting peace.
