Zelensky is ready to negotiate with Trump: what territories Ukraine might lose
Readiness for a new peace plan
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky expressed readiness to work with Donald Trump's administration on a new peace plan for Ukraine that involves significant concessions from Ukraine, including the transfer of territories to Russia. A meeting between Zelensky and US Army Secretary Dan Driscoll took place on Thursday, where Driscoll presented Zelensky with a written copy of this plan. The Office of the President of Ukraine confirmed that the parties agreed to work on the provisions of the plan.
According to information, Driscoll's delegation was expected to be sent to Ukraine to discuss military technologies and strategies. This plan was developed by US special envoy Steve Witkoff along with other American officials in consultation with the Russian side. Earlier this week, a meeting between Zelensky and Witkoff was planned, but it fell through.
The complexity of the peace process
The Trump administration tried to assure Ukraine that the plan is a 'living document'. Witkoff emphasized that the new plan is a 'framework of ideas' that includes both Ukrainian and Russian positions. He also noted that if people do not like certain parts of the plan, they should report it. In turn, Zelensky 'outlined fundamental principles important to our people'. At the same time, the president of Ukraine is under internal political pressure, which may affect further steps in the negotiations.
This situation highlights the complexity of the peace process in Ukraine, as President Zelensky tries to find a balance between the demands of international partners and internal political pressure. The concessions implied by the new plan may provoke an ambiguous response in society, threatening his political support. Further work on this plan could determine not only the relationship between Ukraine and the US but also the overall course of the peace process in the region.
