Zelensky Arrives in London Following Open Letter Addressed to Putin
Ukrainian President’s Visit to the UK Capital
According to Главком: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has landed in London after the release of an open letter directed at Vladimir Putin. During this trip, the Ukrainian leader is meeting with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. A meeting with King Charles III is also scheduled for June 7, 2026. This visit underscores Ukraine’s ongoing diplomatic push to rally Western allies amid the war with Russia.
Appeal and Response
On May 21, Zelensky asked Roman Abramovich to convey a message to Putin expressing readiness for a face-to-face meeting. On June 4, the Ukrainian President’s Office published an open letter proposing a personal meeting in a neutral country, a ceasefire for the duration of talks, and a large-scale prisoner exchange based on an 'all-for-all' formula.
Speaking at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum on June 5, Putin commented on Zelensky’s letter. He acknowledged reviewing its contents but criticized the Ukrainian president for making such proposals public, stating that he 'does not see the point in it yet.' At the same time, Putin insisted he has never refused a personal meeting with the Ukrainian president.
'The key is our defense in the war, greater cooperation for the security of all of Europe in terms of air defense, and our shared view of diplomatic prospects: Europe must be at the negotiating table and must be strong.' Volodymyr Zelensky
Zelensky’s trip to London is part of a broader Ukrainian diplomatic campaign to secure allied support against Russian aggression. The open letter to Putin-offering a meeting in a neutral country, a ceasefire, and a prisoner swap-signals Kyiv’s willingness to negotiate, despite the strained relationship between the two nations.
Putin’s reaction to the letter, including his criticism, may indicate that the Kremlin is not yet prepared for constructive dialogue at this stage, highlighting the ongoing complexity of the regional situation.
As Zelensky pushes for diplomatic engagement, it's essential to consider Putin's perspective on the matter. The Russian leader recently labeled the Ukrainian president's open letter as inappropriate, asserting his own readiness to lead negotiations.
