Kyiv's Energy Supply Under Severe Strain

According to ХВИЛЯ: On February 8, 2026, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the energy situation in Kyiv as the most difficult the capital has faced. To stabilize the crisis, additional reserves are being deployed, including backup teams of utility workers, energy specialists, and rescue personnel. More than 40 brigades from Ukrzaliznytsia, the state railway, are already working in Kyiv, with plans to increase that number to 60. Naftogaz is also sending supplementary groups of experts.

Aid for Civilians and Security Concerns

The Ministry of Internal Affairs has established over 200 heating points across the capital, which were used by nearly 9,000 citizens in the past day. In the hardest-hit districts, 40,000 'warmth kits' have been distributed. The President noted that the situation in Kyiv remains challenging across most metrics, particularly regarding electricity and heating.

In his address, Zelenskyy also highlighted systematic attacks on Ukraine's railway infrastructure. Russian forces carried out a targeted strike on a train in the Chernihiv region, following earlier attacks on rail lines in the Kharkiv and Dnipro regions. He stressed the critical need for assistance under such bombardment, emphasizing the daily requirement for air defense missiles to protect against Russian ballistic attacks. This energy crisis unfolds against the backdrop of Russia's ongoing war, which has targeted civilian infrastructure for years.

The situation in Kyiv and other Ukrainian regions remains tense due to military actions and strikes on critical infrastructure. Authorities are working to provide the population with essential resources, but the challenges related to the energy crisis and security are severe. Sustained international support for both military and humanitarian aid remains crucial for Ukraine's resilience.
