Zelenskyy Backs U.S. Push for War's End, But Rejects Land Concessions
Ukrainian President's Statement
According to Главком: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed support for a United States initiative aimed at accelerating an end to the war in Ukraine. He emphasized, however, that any territorial concessions in this process are unacceptable. The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump is reportedly seeking to reach an agreement by July 4, 2024, the date marking the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence.
Zelenskyy's Comments
Zelenskyy made these remarks following the 'Ukraine - Nordic and Baltic Countries' summit. He noted that during negotiations between Ukraine and the U.S., which took place in Abu Dhabi and Switzerland, the topic of America's desire and vision for ending the war as quickly as possible was raised.
“Regarding July 4 and the fact that the U.S. and President Trump want to end the war, I can only support that,” Zelenskyy stated.
Thus, the Ukrainian president confirmed a readiness to cooperate with the American side on a peace settlement, but called for adherence to fundamental conditions that exclude territorial concessions. This stance highlights the complex balance Kyiv must strike between seeking a decisive end to the conflict and preserving its sovereignty. Zelenskyy's statement underscores Ukraine's commitment to maintaining its territorial integrity within the context of peace talks.
Given the critical importance of U.S. support in countering the aggression, the Ukrainian president's position is likely to influence further diplomatic efforts and the shaping of conditions for ending the conflict. The timeline articulated by the U.S. administration also creates a degree of pressure on all parties to find a compromise in the near term.
