Zelensky asks the USA for security guarantees: what the bilateral agreement entails
Statement of the President of Ukraine on Security
According to Главком: President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky stated the need for legally secured security guarantees from the USA. In the framework of discussing the possibility of a bilateral agreement similar to NATO's collective defense system, Zelensky noted that such an agreement could become an important step in preventing new Russian aggression.
Zelensky discussed options for this agreement with President Donald Trump during negotiations that took place on December 28, 2020, in the USA. At the beginning of December 2020, a framework document was agreed upon in Berlin between the countries of Europe, Ukraine, and the USA concerning security protocols. These protocols aim to prevent possible aggressive actions from Russia and define the consequences for the aggressor nation in case of violation of the peace agreement.
Document Model and US Support
Zelensky emphasized that the model of the document may resemble NATO's collective defense system; however, it does not foresee full membership of Ukraine in the Alliance. He also noted that for the realization of these guarantees, Ukraine needs the support of the US Congress.
'We respect President Trump. And his decisions are influential. But, of course, we need Congress for this,' said President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky.
The discussion of Ukraine's security issues with the USA takes place against the backdrop of increasing tension in the relations between Ukraine and Russia, necessitating the strengthening of Ukraine's defense capabilities. Zelensky's initiative may become a key element in shaping a new security architecture in the region that considers modern challenges and threats. Implementing such guarantees requires not only political will from Ukraine but also active support from American lawmakers, which could significantly influence Ukraine's strategic course in the future.
