Finland Pledges $300 Million for Ukraine’s Defense as Zelenskyy Discusses Drone Deal in Yerevan
Ukrainian President Meets Finnish Prime Minister
According to Главком: During a meeting in Yerevan, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo addressed key defense support topics, including a proposed Drone Deal, Ukraine’s European integration, and the shelter coalition’s progress. Finland announced an additional $300 million in defense aid for Ukraine, with a focus on strengthening the country’s air defense systems.
Zelenskyy proposed that Finland sign a Drone Deal agreement, designed to deepen bilateral cooperation. Teams from both nations will now work out the specifics of this arrangement. A portion of Finland’s new funding may be allocated to the PURL program. The leaders also discussed Ukraine’s EU integration, with Orpo expressing support for opening negotiation clusters to advance the process.
Civil Protection Coalition and International Collaboration
Zelenskyy specifically urged faster progress on the civil protection shelter coalition, highlighting its importance given current security challenges.
“Ukraine is ready to share its expertise and strengthen those who strengthen us from the very beginning,”
the president stated. He thanked Finland for its support, emphasizing that Ukraine fully deserves such backing.
This meeting was part of Zelenskyy’s visit to Yerevan on May 3 for the European Political Community summit. Earlier, he also met with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre and held a phone call with Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, discussing bilateral ties and Ukraine’s EU integration path. The leaders exchanged invitations for official visits.
The discussions underscore the critical role of international cooperation in bolstering Ukraine’s defense capabilities amid ongoing security threats. Finland’s financial commitment and partnership agreements could significantly enhance Ukraine’s air defense effectiveness and support its European integration goals. The outcomes of this collaboration are likely to influence both regional security dynamics and Ukraine’s deeper political integration into European structures.
