Ukrainian President Dismisses Regional Security Chief Over $36 Million Defense Embezzlement Probe
Dismissal of Volodymyr Kompanichenko
According to Главком: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has removed Volodymyr Kompanichenko from his post as head of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) in the Zhytomyr region. This action follows allegations that Kompanichenko was involved in embezzling 1.4 billion hryvnias (approximately $36 million) allocated for constructing protective shelters for combat aircraft. A presidential decree formalized his dismissal from the position.
Volodymyr Kompanichenko had led the Zhytomyr regional SBU office since November 2023, having previously held senior roles within the security service's central apparatus. On February 27, a court ordered him to be held in pre-trial detention for 60 days. According to investigators and the Office of the Prosecutor General, Kompanichenko is implicated in a scheme to steal these state funds, which were intended for aircraft shelters.
Ukraine's Anti-Corruption Drive
The Prosecutor General's Office, in cooperation with the SBU, uncovered the embezzlement scheme related to the construction of protective aircraft shelters. High-ranking officials involved in the plot allegedly attempted to bribe inspectors to cover up substandard construction work. Kompanichenko's dismissal is part of broader, ongoing anti-corruption measures within Ukraine. This crackdown is particularly critical during wartime, as every resource is vital for national defense.
This case highlights the Ukrainian government's efforts to combat corruption at a time when the integrity of defense spending is paramount. Exposing high-level embezzlement schemes and holding officials accountable are seen as crucial steps toward rebuilding public trust in state institutions and ensuring transparency in the funding of defense programs. Such actions are closely watched by international partners who provide military and financial aid.
