Rapid Growth of Unmanned Systems in Ukraine's Armed Forces

According to Главком: At the start of April, the personnel count for Ukraine's unmanned systems forces stood at 101,000 service members. Plans are in place to increase this number to 165,500 by the end of 2026. Since the beginning of December 2025, these drone units have demonstrated increasing effectiveness, neutralizing more enemy personnel than Russia has been able to recruit.

In March 2023, a 29% increase in enemy personnel losses from unmanned systems was recorded compared to February. The number of targets hit in March exceeded 150,000, a 50% rise from the previous month. The average daily execution of combat missions reached over 11,000, indicating the stable performance of these units. This surge in drone warfare is a key component of Ukraine's asymmetric strategy against a larger adversary.

Impact of Middle Strike Capabilities

The use of Middle Strike systems, which can hit targets at operational depths of 30-120 km, warrants particular attention. These systems delivered nearly 350 strikes, resulting in the destruction of:

  • 143 enemy logistics sites and warehouses
  • 52 command posts of the Russian army
  • 20 oil and energy industry facilities
Oleksandr Syrskyi noted: 'I would like to specifically highlight the growing effectiveness of our Middle Strike systems. This is the combined result of the work by domestic UAV complex manufacturers, the increasing skill of our operators, and the organizational decisions we have implemented.'

It was emphasized that for four consecutive months, drones have been eliminating more enemy personnel than Russia can recruit. 'For four months in a row, starting in December 2025, our unmanned systems units have been neutralizing more enemy personnel than it recruits into its ranks,' Syrskyi stressed during a meeting on drone development.

The importance of unmanned systems in modern warfare continues to grow, as they provide a significant combat advantage by reducing friendly casualties and destroying key enemy assets. With plans to expand the drone corps to 165,500 personnel, Ukraine is maintaining its focus on military innovation, a factor that could decisively shape the future battlefield.

As Ukraine's unmanned systems continue to evolve, the looming threat from Russia's drone capabilities cannot be ignored. With reports indicating that Russia plans to deploy 100,000 drone operators by 2026, the necessity for Ukraine to enhance its aerial tactics becomes even more pressing.
