Ukraine Honors Its Marine Corps on May 23
Ukraine's Marine Corps Day
According to Главком: On May 23, 2026, Ukraine will celebrate Marine Corps Day, a holiday first established in 2014. Originally observed on November 16 until 2017, the date was shifted to May 23 by a presidential decree (No. 145/2018) in 2018. This occasion honors not only today's marines but also their storied legacy, which spans more than a century. For context, Ukraine's Marine Corps has played a vital role in the country's defense, especially during the full-scale war that began in 2022.
The History of Ukraine's Marine Corps
The origins of Ukraine's Marine Corps date back to 1918, when a brigade of the Ukrainian State's naval infantry began forming. The first coastal unit to undergo Ukrainianization in the Black Sea Fleet was the Sevastopol Half-Crew, led by Lieutenant Colonel Volodymyr Savchenko-Bilsky. Officers and sailors then created the Petro Sahaidachny Independent Naval Company. On May 23, 1918, Hetman Pavlo Skoropadsky issued Order No. 70, establishing a Marine Corps Brigade composed of three regiments. Each regiment had three battalions, and each battalion included four infantry companies and one machine-gun company. On July 15, 1918, a distinct marine uniform was introduced, marking a new chapter for this branch of the military.
The Marine Corps actively fought in the battles of 1918–1921. Members of the company clashed with Bolsheviks on the streets of Kyiv in February 1918, and a second marine regiment was formed in 1919. These two regiments were later consolidated into a Marine Division under the command of Mykhailo Bilynsky. The First Hutsul Regiment was integrated into the 12th Division of the Ukrainian People's Republic's Kyiv Group. However, in December 1919, many marines fell victim to a typhus epidemic. In 1920, the Ukrainian People's Army established the 1st Fleet Half-Crew, and on November 21, 1920, sailors of the Military Flotilla aboard the armored train 'Chornomorets' secured the withdrawal of Ukrainian forces to the Polish side of the Zbruch River. On November 17, 1921, participants in a raid were defeated near Mali Minky in the Zhytomyr region, and Mykhailo Bilynsky died that same day.
In the modern era, Ukraine's Marine Corps has been heavily engaged in combat, particularly since 2022 during the ongoing war. They conduct stabilization, raid, offensive, and defensive operations; protect and defend state borders; and reinforce naval bases, deployment points, and seaports. Marines also take part in special operations, including counterterrorism, anti-piracy, and peacekeeping missions. Their heroism in contemporary warfare commands deep respect and recognition, as they demonstrate unwavering resilience on the front lines while safeguarding Ukraine's territorial integrity and sovereignty.
Thus, Ukraine's Marine Corps boasts a rich historical narrative, encompassing both periods of ascendance and trials. Commemorating their contributions to national defense is a crucial element of the Ukrainian people's national consciousness and historical memory.
Marine Corps Day, observed annually, serves not only as a reminder of the heroism of today's service members but also as a recognition of a history spanning over a century. This holiday underscores the importance of the marines in defending the nation and reinforcing national identity-a particularly relevant theme given current challenges. Honoring the marines boosts public morale and celebrates their courage and self-sacrifice in the fight for Ukraine's independence.
As Ukraine commemorates its Marine Corps on May 23, it's also essential to recognize the significance of other military branches in the nation's defense. For instance, the recent celebration of Infantry Day on May 6 highlights the bravery and history of the soldiers who serve on land, further illustrating the diverse contributions of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in protecting the country.
