Trump Administration Pressured Currency Printer Over $250 Bill Featuring His Portrait
Designing a $250 Banknote
According to Главком: Officials in former President Donald Trump’s administration pressured the U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing to develop a $250 banknote bearing the sitting president’s portrait. U.S. Treasurer Brandon Beach and his senior advisor Mike Brown urged bureau staff to prepare prototypes for this bill starting last year. Beach submitted design mockups to the bureau in August and September 2025, with one option placing Trump’s portrait at the center of the note, positioned between the signatures of the president and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. Artist Ian Alexander created the mockup, discussing it with Trump, who approved changes to the initial design-including the addition of American flag colors and a logo for the nation’s 250th anniversary.
Legal and Procedural Hurdles
Featuring Trump’s image would mark the first time a living person appeared on U.S. currency in over 150 years, as federal law currently only permits depictions of deceased individuals on banknotes. No living person has been featured on U.S. currency since 1866. A bill that would allow Trump’s portrait on the banknote was introduced in Congress in 2025, but it has not advanced.
Bureau Director Patricia Solimene repeatedly pointed out legal and procedural obstacles to Beach and Brown, stating:
“We don’t have the authority to do this. We cannot move forward, and all interested parties haven’t even met to discuss next steps.” - Patricia Solimene
She also noted that creating a new banknote often takes six to eight years, especially for such a high denomination. On April 27, Solimene was unexpectedly transferred from her position by Treasury leadership, and Brown became the bureau’s acting director.
Former bureau director Larry Felix reported that developing the new $100 bill took about 10 years. U.S. Representative Joe Wilson, a Republican, announced his intention to introduce a bill authorizing President Donald Trump’s image on the $250 banknote, emphasizing that “if this legislative mandate is signed, the bureau is acting proactively to produce a commemorative banknote that will properly honor the 250th anniversary of our great nation.”
The push to create a $250 bill featuring President Trump highlights both the administration’s efforts to shape national financial symbolism and the significant legal and procedural challenges involved. While marking the 250th anniversary of the United States by issuing a new banknote could be a meaningful step, realizing this idea would require considerable time and the resolution of numerous legal issues. Given the historical context, the question of depicting living individuals on American currency is likely to spark substantial debate in both society and political circles.
