In Ukraine, people who retire can continue to work and receive both a salary and state benefits. This is allowed by law, and the Pension Fund emphasizes that employment does not reduce the amount of the pension. 24 Kanal writes about this.

Pension and work: what rules apply in 2025

After retiring, a person can stay in their position. For working pensioners, the Pension Fund recalculates every two years, taking into account additional work experience and, if necessary, the new level of income.

The amount of the pension is determined individually, depending on the insurance record and the salary from which contributions were paid. Earnings after retirement do not affect the decrease in benefits.

In which cases changes are possible:

  • recalculation of the pension amount — once every two years;

  • unchanged benefits — salary does not reduce the pension;

  • risk of suspension — if the pensioner did not notify the Pension Fund about employment.

Pension and work: when payments may be temporarily lost

A pensioner may temporarily lose their pension if they do not notify the Pension Fund about their employment. In this case, the Pension Fund recalculates, and any excess payments must be returned.

Separate rules apply for pensions for length of service. If a person returns to work that entitles them to this type of pension, the payments are suspended. They are restored the day after dismissal.

Temporary reduction of the pension may also occur in case of overpayments: the state can withhold 20–50% until the full repayment of funds. However, even after withholdings, the amount cannot fall below 2361 hryvnias. The pensioner has the right to submit an application and disagree with the withholdings.

Earlier we wrote that the government of Ukraine planned to increase pension payments for the next year.
