Drone Attack on Moscow Prompts Temporary Airport Shutdown
Drone Attack Strikes Moscow
According to Главком: On February 22, 2026, the Russian capital was targeted by a drone attack, leading to the temporary closure of all its airports. Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin reported that seven drones were neutralized during the incident. Emergency services are currently at the crash sites, investigating the situation.
By 4:00 PM local time on the same day, operations had resumed at Moscow's airports, including Vnukovo, Domodedovo, Zhukovsky, and Sheremetyevo. According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, 15 drones were detected in the Moscow region, with 11 of them heading toward the capital. This was not an isolated event; a similar drone attack on Moscow was recorded just a week earlier, on February 15, 2026.
Incidents Reported in Other Regions
Beyond Moscow, other Russian regions have experienced recent attacks. On February 12, 2026, explosions occurred at the Progress plant, a strategic defense enterprise, in Michurinsk, Tambov Oblast. Additionally, around midnight in Bryansk Oblast, explosions were reported in the vicinity of Bryansk city, as well as in the towns of Dyatkovo, Fokino, and Sel'tso. These incidents were followed by power outages in Bryansk.
These events form part of a concerning pattern of drone and sabotage incidents within Russia, highlighting vulnerabilities in its domestic security. The attacks underscore the evolving nature of threats facing the country, which now include long-range drones capable of striking deep inside its territory. The Russian government is likely facing increased pressure to reassess and strengthen its air defense and critical infrastructure protection measures in response to this instability.
