Austria closes the last center for Ukrainian refugees: what does this mean

One of the countries closes the refugee support center
Закриття останнього центру для біженців з України в Австрії: наслідки для українців.

According to information from the city authorities of Vienna, the Quartier Schlossberg shelter, where Ukrainian refugees were located, will close by the end of 2025. This center, which was managed by the organization Volkshilfe, has always been overcrowded. Even though it was designed for 200 people, it constantly exceeded its capacity.

Besides Quartier Schlossberg, there were no other places in Vienna for accepting Ukrainian refugees. This center has provided assistance to nearly 9,000 Ukrainians, offering temporary accommodation, food, consultations, and help with documents. However, due to insufficient funding, the government allocated only 190 euros per person, which was not enough for the full functioning of the center.

After the closure of the center, Ukrainian refugees will be able to receive assistance through social networks, without a special reception center. Currently, more than 10,800 Ukrainians receive basic support, while the total number of Ukrainian refugees in Austria reaches 30,000 people.

Vienna will close the last reception center for Ukrainian refugees. At present, the social assistance system for Ukrainian displaced persons will be reviewed, and they will receive necessary support through other channels. In this regard, the city authorities are seeking alternative ways to provide necessary assistance to Ukrainian citizens.
