Tax violations of Telegram channels investigated by BEB
Економічна безпека України розпочала розслідування податкових схем, пов'язаних з великими каналами у Telegram.

Economic Security Bureau Investigation

According to Главком: The Economic Security Bureau of Ukraine (ESBU) has initiated a pre-trial investigation into potential violations of tax and financial laws by several large Telegram channels with audiences in the millions. This action follows reports of suspected illegal commercial activities conducted through these platforms. The ESBU's main detective unit has already begun its investigative work.

The Bureau emphasized that Telegram channels operating commercially are subject to Ukrainian law and must declare their income and pay taxes accordingly.

"The ESBU is acting systematically. The rules are the same for everyone-regardless of platform, audience size, or business format,"

officials stated. This move highlights the increasing scrutiny of digital platforms by Ukrainian authorities, which are adapting enforcement to the modern digital economy.

Ensuring Legal Compliance

Significant to this case is information shared by Ukrainian MP Yaroslav Zheleznyak concerning the country's largest anonymous Telegram channels. It was noted that Telegram bonds worth approximately $500 million, held in Russia, have been frozen due to Western sanctions. Telegram's founder, Pavel Durov, is also referenced in connection with this situation.

The ESBU's probe underscores the necessity of tax compliance not only for traditional businesses but also for new forms of commercial activity like Telegram channels. This action may serve as a signal to other platforms and enterprises operating in Ukraine about the need for transparency in financial operations and adherence to the law.

Furthermore, the freezing of Telegram's bonds demonstrates how international sanctions are impacting the company's financial dealings, potentially complicating its operations in Ukraine and elsewhere. This development could have long-term implications for the growth of digital platforms in the region and their relationship with government regulators.
