Trump called on Europe to stop purchasing Russian oil: details of the new strategy
U.S. President Donald Trump called on European partners to stop purchasing Russian oil and to increase economic pressure on China to force Moscow to end its war against Ukraine. This information was disclosed by CNN, citing a senior White House official.
Status of peace negotiations
Negotiations for a peaceful resolution of the conflict took place with the participation of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and several European leaders. According to French President Emmanuel Macron, 26 countries are ready to join the peacekeeping mission if a ceasefire agreement is reached. However, for the successful implementation of the agreement, security guarantees are needed, which, according to Macron, should be provided by the U.S.
'In the coming days, we will finalize American support for these security guarantees,' said Macron.
The Trump administration believes that Europe must take on key responsibility. It emphasizes the possible limited involvement of the U.S., particularly in providing air support, without deploying American troops to Ukraine.
Additional pressure on Russia and China
Trump stressed the necessity of ending funding for Russia through the purchase of energy resources. There were also expressed views on the need to pressure China, which Washington believes is helping Russia maintain its military campaign.
Zelensky called on Western allies
President Zelensky urged Western allies to continue exerting pressure on Moscow and other countries cooperating with it. He also confirmed talks on strengthening the air defense system and stated the intention to continue in this direction.
The situation with the peaceful resolution remains unresolved
Despite the efforts, negotiations for a peaceful resolution remain blocked. As noted by Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, preparatory work is needed for a meeting between Putin and Zelensky. At the same time, Trump expressed disappointment over the lack of progress following his meeting with Putin and is contemplating his personal involvement in negotiations between Kyiv and Moscow.
Other discussed aspects
President Trump also reminded of the increase in tariffs on Russian oil imports to 50% and announced possible sanctions against other states cooperating with Russia. In turn, Zelensky rejected the proposal for a meeting in Moscow put forward by Putin, citing a lack of support from the U.S.
In light of the calls from Trump and Zelensky, it is clear that the tense situation in eastern Ukraine remains relevant, however, efforts are being made to negotiate a peaceful resolution. The continuation of negotiations and pressure on Russia and China indicates the intentions of the international community to help resolve the conflict.
