A Bukovinian Master Has Been Making Coffins for 40 Years: Why People Order Them in Advance
Yaroslav Malysh from the village of Yablunytsia in Bukovina has been crafting wooden coffins by hand for over 40 years. He started doing this in school when his father passed away, and now it takes him only eight hours. The man skillfully reproduces traditional methods of coffin making, while also applying modern technologies.
«I made a coffin for myself with integrity. I don't want to buy one because they are weak. When they start piling up clay, it immediately collapses, but mine doesn't, as it is made of thick boards. At first, my children were afraid of this coffin, so I hid it everywhere - even in the hay,» says Yaroslav.
Besides coffins, the master also made wells and houses, but he notices that young people are no longer interested in this craft. Meanwhile, the popularity of eco-friendly funerals is growing worldwide, allowing for a reduced impact on the environment and becoming an alternative to traditional burial or cremation.
From the history of master Yaroslav, it can be understood that in different regions, ancient crafts are still preserved, which are gradually disappearing due to the lack of interest among the youth. It is also important to remember the trend towards environmentally conscious solutions in the modern world, which is reflected even in aspects such as funeral rites.
