Membership in the UN Security Council: What It Means for Ukraine
Ukraine has gained a seat in the UN Security Council and promised to use the platform to conduct a political struggle against Russia due to the annexation of Crimea and support for eastern Ukrainian separatists.
193 members of the General Assembly also elected four other countries - Egypt, Japan, Senegal, and Uruguay. All five countries received non-permanent seats in the Security Council for two years starting from January 1st.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin described yesterday as a very important day for Ukraine and the United Nations in the struggle for peace 'from Russian aggression - and the fight against Russian aggression'. He said the country is proud of the 177 votes it received, calling this support 'a sign of the world's solidarity with Ukraine'.

Earlier this week, Klimkin held a meeting in New York with UN ambassadors. 'The elections to the Security Council have particular significance for us against the backdrop of ongoing Russian aggression, - Klimkin told reporters on Tuesday. - For the first time we faced a completely unique and unimaginable situation ..., where a permanent member of the Security Council is an aggressor in Ukraine and is waging a hybrid war'.
After gaining non-permanent membership, Ukraine is ready to work with other council members to ensure stability and security in Africa, the Middle East, and elsewhere.
However, Ukraine remains embroiled in conflict with the Russian Federation. Minister Klimkin emphasized that Russian troops, mercenaries, and weapons must leave the east of the country, Ukraine must regain full control over its border with Russia, and the international community and the UN must gain control over human rights compliance and full access to the region.
Ukraine will also continue 'political pressure on Russia to recognize that Crimea was unlawfully annexed' to strengthen American and European sanctions.
'We need strong support from the entire international community to resolve the Crimean issue, because Crimea is Ukrainian' - said Pavlo Klimkin.
Klimkin predicted that 'Crimea will return to Ukraine much sooner than many believe', asserting that no one in the world can feel safe due to Russia, which is violating international laws and rules.
It is noteworthy that representatives of the Russian Federation paid special attention to the word 'non-permanent' in response to Ukraine's election to the UN Security Council.
The UN Security Council consists of 15 member countries, including 5 permanent ones (Russia, China, the United Kingdom, the United States, and France) and ten non-permanent members.
