Cucumber Prices Surge 61% in Ukraine as Winter Demand Outstrips Supply
Sharp Increase in Cucumber Prices
According to Главком: Cucumber prices in Ukraine have risen dramatically, surging by 61% since late January 2025. This sharp increase is primarily driven by high demand for greenhouse cucumbers against a backdrop of limited supply. As of this week, prices for greenhouse cucumbers range from 120 to 150 Ukrainian hryvnia per kilogram, which is approximately $2.81 to $3.51 USD per kg. This price spike is a significant shift for consumers, particularly during the winter months when fresh local produce is scarce.
The cucumbers available on the domestic market are now largely imported from Turkey, which has become the key supplier of greenhouse vegetables during the winter season. This reliance underscores the importance of imports for meeting domestic demand. In recent weeks alone, cucumber prices have climbed by an average of 10%, indicating a continuing upward trend.
Broader Shifts in the Vegetable Market
This price surge for cucumbers coincides with other changes in Ukraine's agricultural sector. The prolonged period of price stability for traditional 'borscht set' vegetables has ended, which may influence overall vegetable pricing. Furthermore, wholesale potato prices have also risen rapidly, suggesting wider inflationary pressures within the farming industry. These combined factors mean the Ukrainian vegetable market is undergoing significant changes that require attention from both consumers and producers.
The rising cost of cucumbers reflects not just seasonal fluctuations but broader market trends. Imports from Turkey remain crucial, as domestic production cannot satisfy winter demand. Given the concurrent price increases for staple vegetables like potatoes, these shifts are likely to impact Ukrainian consumer habits and the overall food market in the country, potentially affecting household budgets for basic goods.
