Four EU Nations Oppose Fast-Track Membership for Ukraine, Says Foreign Minister Sibiha
Ukraine's EU Membership Bid
According to Главком: Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sibiha has announced that the nation is now treating its European Union membership application as a core domestic policy priority. He highlighted the rapid pace at which Ukraine is meeting the required accession criteria and expressed readiness to forgo certain transitional benefits to accelerate integration. However, Germany, France, Italy, and the Netherlands have voiced opposition to granting Ukraine expedited entry into the bloc. This comes as Ukraine continues its defensive war against Russia, adding urgency to its European aspirations.
Andrii Sibiha: 'I am a passionate believer in our European future, and I know it will happen. What I always say is that I want this goal to shift from being a foreign policy paradigm to an internal one. It must become our own domestic domain.'
The minister further stressed that 'there is arithmetic, there are criteria, there are clear markers, and we are meeting them. We are progressing very quickly. And we are working to ensure a decision on our membership is made.'
Ukraine's Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration, Taras Kachka, supported this stance, acknowledging that Ukraine still has a path of adaptation and legislative alignment ahead, but affirmed that 'this is all inevitable; we will do it.' Sibiha added that protecting Ukrainian business during this process is necessary and normal. He called for implementing the most significant advantages for the country that could have a multiplier effect, urging not to fear temporary periods and exceptions.
The State of Ukraine's EU Membership Prospects
Proposals from Germany and France include offering Ukraine symbolic benefits during a pre-accession phase. These symbolic advantages, however, would not entail full EU membership rights, access to the EU budget, or voting power. The path to membership remains complex, and despite Ukraine's readiness to fulfill the criteria, the positions of some member states could impact the speed of the integration process.
The decision on Ukraine's EU membership carries substantial political and economic weight, as it will affect not only the country's internal politics but also its relations with other EU states. The stance of Germany, France, Italy, and the Netherlands against a fast-track accession points to potential hurdles that could delay the realization of Ukraine's Euro-integration ambitions.
As Ukraine navigates its complex path towards EU integration, the nation's leadership remains steadfast in its pursuit of full membership, rejecting any notion of a subordinate status. This determination is evident in the recent statements by Foreign Minister Sibiha, who emphasizes the urgency of their aspirations amid ongoing challenges.
