CSIS Report Puts Russian War Casualties at 1.2 Million, Kremlin Spokesman Dismisses Figures
Russian Military Casualties in the Ukraine War
According to Главком: A report from the American Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) details the scale of Russian military losses in the war against Ukraine. According to CSIS data, total Russian casualties, including those killed and wounded, approach 1.2 million personnel. The report specifically estimates that approximately 325,000 Russian service members have been killed since the full-scale invasion began.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has dismissed the CSIS report's findings as unreliable. He emphasized that only Russia's Ministry of Defense can provide official information, a ministry which he noted has not released casualty statistics for over three years. The last official disclosure from the Russian Defense Ministry was in September 2022, when it claimed 5,937 military fatalities.
Repatriation and Humanitarian Efforts
In a separate development related to the war's human toll, Russia states it has repatriated one thousand bodies it claims belong to Ukrainian service members. Investigative and expert institutions of Ukraine's Ministry of Internal Affairs will conduct examinations to identify the repatriated remains. The conflicting casualty claims are part of an ongoing information war. Dmitry Peskov cast doubt on the credibility of the CSIS analysis, remarking:
"I do not think such reports can or should be considered reliable information." - Dmitry Peskov
The CSIS figures point to substantial losses for Russian forces, which could impact both military strategy and troop morale. The Kremlin's denial of these numbers highlights the parallel information conflict being waged alongside the battlefield engagements. Meanwhile, the repatriation of fallen Ukrainian soldiers' bodies demonstrates that humanitarian efforts continue despite the intense frontline situation. Independent analysts often find Russian official casualty figures to be significant underestimates, while Ukraine and its allies seek to document the war's full cost.
