On the third Thursday of May, Ukraine traditionally celebrates Embroidery Day — a holiday that has transformed from a student initiative into an international cultural event over two decades. On this day, Ukrainians around the world wear embroidered shirts as a symbol of national identity and unity.

This is reported by the Judicial and Legal Newspaper.

Embroidery Day originated in Chernivtsi

The holiday began in 2006 by students of Chernivtsi National University named after Yuriy Fedkovych. The idea was simple — to choose one day when everyone willing comes to school in embroidered shirts.

They intentionally chose a weekday for the celebration. The initiators wanted to emphasize that the embroidered shirt is part of the everyday life of Ukrainians, not just festive clothing.

How Embroidery Day became international

After 2014, the holiday began to actively go beyond the borders of Ukraine. Flash mobs were joined by representatives of the Ukrainian diaspora, foreigners, and public figures from various countries.

Traditionally, on this day in Ukraine, competitions for the best embroidered shirt are held, and themed photos are published on social media.

In addition to Embroidery Day, May 21 is also celebrated as the World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development and International Tea Day.

This year, the date of the holiday coincides with the church holiday of the Ascension of the Lord, as well as the day of remembrance of Saints Constantine and Helena.

We remind you that the Civic Organization "Protection of the State" initiated the official recognition of Embroidery Day as a national holiday.
