Two Russian Paratroopers Face Trial for Killing a Woman in Bucha
Indictment Brought Against Russian Airborne Troops
According to Главком: Ukraine has sent an indictment to court against two Russian paratroopers accused of murdering a 69-year-old woman in Bucha in March 2022. Vitaly Mashkov and Konstantin Medvedev, who served in the 234th Air Assault Regiment of the 76th Air Assault Division of the Russian Aerospace Forces, are implicated in this war crime. The town of Bucha, located near Kyiv, became a symbol of alleged Russian atrocities during the early stages of the full-scale invasion.
Details of the Incident
In March 2022, Russian forces temporarily occupied Bucha, with paratroopers patrolling the streets and controlling the movement of local residents. While patrolling Sklozavodska Street, they spotted the 69-year-old local woman returning home carrying water. Without any legal justification, the Russian soldiers opened fire on her with automatic rifles. According to Ukraine's National Police, the woman tried to escape by running into a residential building, but one of the bullets pierced the front door and fatally wounded her.
For violating the laws and customs of war through intentional murder, the occupiers face up to 15 years in prison or life imprisonment. Bucha was liberated from Russian occupiers on March 31, 2022, after 33 days of occupation. The first villages to bear the brunt of the enemy attack were:
- Blystavytsia
- Sinyak
- Havrylivka
- Zdvzhivka
- Lubianka
- Myrotske
Earlier, a Russian soldier was identified who shot dead a 70-year-old local resident during the occupation of Bucha in March 2022. It was also reported that Russian officer Yuri Kim will be tried for the execution of 17 civilians during the occupation of Bucha.
This case is part of a broader spectrum of war crimes that occurred during the Russian occupation of Ukrainian territories.
Trials of war criminals can serve as an important signal that accountability for committed crimes will be enforced, and may represent a crucial step in restoring justice for war victims. It is also worth noting that the international community continues to monitor developments and provides support to Ukraine in investigating war crimes.
The ongoing investigations into war crimes committed during the occupation of Bucha continue to unfold, highlighting the severe impact on the local population. In addition to the trial of the paratroopers, authorities are actively seeking testimonies from witnesses who sought refuge in a kindergarten during this tumultuous period. These accounts are crucial for understanding the full extent of the atrocities faced by residents.
